Last Saturday, I went bird watching out at Crex Meadows near Grantsburg, WI. I saw hundreds of swans throughout the day, including dozens near the shore where I took this photo. Spring is in full spring up in Northern Minnesota! Plants have been popping up left and right and many of the trees are primed to explode with leaves. I've never regretted dragging myself out of bed early for a photo shoot. That doesn't mean it's easy to get up for them, though... Worth getting a bit wet for. Today's trip to the Sax Zim Bog was 100% worth the time! While not the spectacular overhead show I was hoping for, I'm still quite happy with this show last night. Swipe for a look behind the scenes! The prairie dogs were an unexpected highlight of my trip to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It's pretty incredible getting a view like this on the rare day that I'm in the office. How about another landscape shot from Teddy Roosevelt? IG really doesn't do this shot justice. You have to see it large to really appreciate the way the light spills across the landscape. It's pretty fantastic to have views like this only an hour away. Two days ago, I returned from my first trip to Japan in 13 years. I was there to document the St. Olaf Band's tour, but had the occasional moment to step away on my own. In one of those moments, I visited Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens, where I photographed this gardener tending the irises shortly after the gardens opened for the day. There's more to spring than birds! I love seeing the crab apples in full bloom. Many birders can probably hear this photo in their head. The IR camera makes a return! With the landscape greening up, it's fun to see how things look in a different spectrum. I also captured this photo of a killdeer in a recently burned area on Friday. While I initially thought that this pose was a mating display, further research told me that it's actually faking a broken wing in an attempt to distract me from a potential nesting site. I've been trying to get photos of birds in recently burned prairie for a while. Last night, I finally got this shot. Did you know that red-winged blackbirds are one of the most abundant birds in North America? One study estimated their population at 150 million individuals. Wildlife photos can come from anywhere, even your front yard. Not the easiest animal to get good photos of!
